Why would I want an onbuhimo?

Onbuhimos are perfect for quick "ups" without putting pressure on the waist. Great for use while pregnant or for anyone who prefers a more "backpack" style without a waist belt.

The Lenny Buckle Onbuhimo carrier is an advanced carrier designed for children who can already sit unassisted. We recommend this carrier for those who are already comfortable with making a supportive seat for baby in a carrier and who are comfortable with your child's weight being high on the shoulders/upper back.

The onbuhimo style is most commonly used for back carry. The adjustable pull strap for the width of the panel provides sizing flexibility for a wide range of children.

• Place your child on the carrier on an elevated surface like a bed, with the rounded flap down, the reverse side up, and the hood back and away from you
  
  
• Pull the width adjustment cord so that the panel goes from your child's knee to knee as support and doesn't force the leg straight. Knot to hold the width in place
  
  
• Put your child's legs through the backpack straps. Your child's legs will be partially supported by the straps and partially supported by the seat
  
  
• Lift the rounded flap up in front of your child to make a seat. You can ask your child to help you hold this in place!. When doing so, check the depth of the seat by seeing where it falls on baby's back. For arms in, it can line up at the top of the shoulder. For arms out, it should be just under the shoulder blade. You may need to let out the adjustment at the top to give more fabric and a larger seat panel
  
  
• Lift your child onto your back depending on your preference. You can squat down and put your arms in like a backpack, hip scoot, or superman. Clip the chest strap
  
  
• Once your child is up, check that the seat is in place properly. Now it's time to adjust! Bump your child up as high as you need to be comfortable, adjusting the straps as you do so. In this carrier, when baby is higher, the chest strap will move lower. Tighten as needed for comfort for both of you. Remember that you are not tightening your child closer to your body, but rather, you are rotating the carrier around so they settle higher. You want your child shoulder to shoulder with you for optimum comfort

• The Standard size will fit your child for a long time! We recommend this size starting when your child can sit in a tripod sit for a typically developing child, or when your child can maintain an open airway and has sufficient truck control. If you can hold your child comfortably on your hip in everyday life, they likely have enough trunk control. For a typically developing child, this is usually between 4-6mon to start and can be worn into 2T-3T pants for length, depending on your child's comfort.
  
  
• If your child is already 2yrs old and in 2T pants for length, you may be more comfortable in a Toddler size. This size fits most children from 2T through 4T pants for length, or until the child or caregiver is no longer comfortable.
  
  
• Some plus-size caregivers may be able to use the Preschool size starting when their child is around 2T pants for length. The Preschool size is much larger than the Toddler size, however, so we generally don't recommend the Preschool size until your little one is in 3T or 4T pants for length. The Preschool size can fit some children into size 7/8!
  
  
• The biggest factor for sizing is in the width of the panel, which you want to comfortably support the thigh and not overextend the knee, and the height. Your child will not fit well in the Toddler or Preschool sizes if they are not tall enough as the pocket will be too deep and uncomfortable.
  
  
• Consider how your child prefers to be carried--arms in or arms out--before sizing for the panel. We recommend arms-out for this style of carrier.

Wrap conversions start out as long woven baby wraps. That fabric is then cut and sewn into a different type of baby carrier. This could be a ring sling, onbuhimo, meh dai, or SSC. Why does it matter?

Long woven wraps are made to carry babies.They're woven in a way that's soft and supportive. They're also breathable. Many wraps are made of easy-care materials.

Designs are woven into the fabric. No screen printing that fades. It's the real deal, straight from the loom!

Carriers that aren't made of long woven wraps are often more stiff. SSC carriers are commonly made with canvas or even plastic. These materials may be durable, but they aren't as comfortable or flexible. There isn't much airflow through the fabric, which can lead to overheating. Patterns are pressed onto the fabric as opposed to being a part of it.

Wrap conversion carriers are as strong and long-lasting as non-wrap conversion carriers. But, they have many other benefits! For the ultimate in comfort for you and your child, a wrap conversion baby carrier is the way to go.
