Hey there! I was reminded of something really important, and I wanted to share it with you!
Hear my reflections in the short video below, and read more about it when you scroll down:
Many of us come to babywearing as a necessary tool to help with our children- especially those of us with “high needs” children.
Today I reflected on 2 recent babywearing experiences that reminded me that small changes make a big difference!
Last night, I wore my child in an onbuhimo- a waistless carrier that I like for quick “ups” around the house. But I don’t prefer this style when my baby falls asleep- for me, that sleepy posture puts pressure in places that cause me pain. So if I think baby will be sleeping, I usually pick something else.
When baby fell asleep, I could have tried adjusting the carrier. I could have tried moving baby to my front, or I could have even laid baby down to see if they would stay sleeping.
But instead, I said, well, baby is happy. I’ll just deal with it.
Unfortunately, this put me in a lot of pain even after taking baby out of the carrier and into this morning- I just didn’t have the right combination of baby’s position and carrier style for my needs at that time. But, like so many of us do for our kids, I “suffered through it” to keep baby happy.
Today, I knew my baby was tired and resisting a nap. I put them into my wrap meh dai carrier, which is more comfortable for me with the wider passes, and it sits better on my body for a napping child.
After little one fell asleep and I started doing some activities, my lower back really started bothering me. I thought to myself at first, oh, just deal with it, you don’t want to disturb them.
But then I said, no- I can do this. I am allowed to be comfortable. I can fix this and keep baby happy and safe!
So I look down, and I realize that my waist belt has slid upwards- as baby settled, it has shifted. An easy fix! I re-tied the waist belt to be parallel to the floor, adjusted and re-tightened. Baby stayed happily sleeping and cozy, and I was instantly relieved!
No matter how many times I’ve worked with others or adjusted things myself, I am always shocked at how truly small, simple adjustments make such a huge difference in comfort and usability. Sometimes you just need a little support to get it right!
